St Patricks Day Brooch and Easy Quilled Card Tutorial part One

Brooch defined as ornamental pin with a clasp to attach it to a garment, just thought I would clarify that for you despite all the years I’ve now lived in North America there are some things I still do not know the Canadian for and this is one of them.

Normally I do not divide my tutorials into parts but this time will be the exception ,for two reasons ,the first being it is already partially completed if you recall earlier last week  I referred to a contest being run by Toronto craft Alert ,this brooch is one of my unfinished projects , one I was going to dig out and write a tutorial for, anyway for the St Patrick’s Day Blog Carnival,in order to write the tutorial I need to go back and start at the beginning and photograph the the sequence.

I also intend to show you haw to make a St Pats day card ,by adapting the same image, shamb and teaching you another couple of easy quilling shapes to decorate it with. Annoyingly the second reason I cannot complete the tutorial today is my graphics program has gone on the fritz and will not let me open any new projects ,no matter what I do it won’t work so I will probably have to reinstall it either that or reinstall windows (I hope not) So thought I would post what I have so far ,you may download the pattern  print outs from a link at the bottom of the page. As the pieces are fairly small particularly for the brooch it’s probably a good idea to cut them out in advance so perhaps it will work out for the best that the tutorial is posted  in two parts

There are two pattern sheets both containing way more pieces than you actually need so don’t panic when you see them, for each brooch you will need two of the smaller shamrock bouquets and several individual shamrock leaves please note that the shamrock line going across the center of the pattern printout ,these shamrocks are slightly smaller than the others, please cut out 3 of each size. If you do not intend to make the St Patrick’s day Greeting card you need only print out sheet one ,if you plan on doing them both print out sheet two only. From sheet two for the card you will need two of the large shamrock bouquets  and 4 shamrock leaves also make or find some 1/2 cm quilling strips in a shade of green similar to the color of the graphic if you recall in the st Valentines card tutorial I explained what quilling is and how you can make your own quilling strips so to refresh your memory or those that didn’t do the Valentine tutorial it can be found here. However I am going to do two versions of the St pats card one with quilling one without . Those wanting to do the none quilled design cut four little green hearts from the printout sheets

thumb2bbbthumb2bAlright then besides the pint out sheets what else will you need firstly and most importantly for each St Patrick’s Day  brooch or pin you want to make you will need a small to medium sized safety pin. It was all for the lack of a safety pin that this project got put on the back burner this time last year. In our house there’s three things that you can guarantee never find when you need one safety pins ,elastic bands and plasters (sorry band aids). Ok what else do you need that’s not shown on picture below, tiny piece of ribbon doesn’t have to be gold any color will do.

Some of the items in the picture you may not recognize out of context ,the white circular item next to the beer bottle cap is the pull out internal closure from a 1litre carton of orange juice or any fruit juice or cartons of milk have them ,I think, you need either this plastic disk or a beer bottle top (yet another reason for hubby to have a beer, and you said he showed no interest in your craft projects.) The gold strip and the white strip are in fact wire ties that fix things in place in packaging or come in boxes of garbage bags so in fact are the shorter dark colored strips these too are wire ties but cut in half and painted green (these will be used for the stems of the shamrock.) So yes we’re blue bin diving again. Just so you’ve got it straight. Recommendation for brooch definitely recommend using card stock will make project just that little bit easier to handle ,before cutting out pattern pieces paint or pencil crayon in green on back of each piece so no white back shows (definitely easier to do before cutting rather than after)

just in case you hadn’t noticed yes Pages Blog does have a new color scheme ,in all of my techy messings last week I discovered that old theme had a fault in its display in some versions of explorer,(I use Firefox so wasn’t aware)right hand sidebar dropped to bottom of page no way to fix it had to look for new theme so any of you were experiencing this problem it should now be fixed. Also finally managed to get the new post alert by email set up see top right hand corner if you would like email alerts to new posts rather than rss feeds.(what is Rss) Seeing as the amount of grief it caused me to get it working I expect at least 50 new subscribers by the end of the week, it is free you know so go subscribe either by rss feed or email alert.

You may find the shamrock printout pages here

Wanting to leave you still with an Irish feeling
